Situated in northeast Vietnam, Quang Ninh borders upon China’s Guangxi province Its capital city Halong is 165 kilometers from Hanoi. Quang Ninh covers an area of 5,938 square kilometers, 46% of which is mountains, 43% is hilly terrain and plains and 11% are islands. It has a coastline of 250 kilometers, an average annual temperature of 23℃, precipitation of 2,000 mm～2,500 mm per annum and an average humidity of 83%. With a population of over 1 million, Quang Ninh governs Halong City (at the prefecture level), three county-level cities and nine counties.

As the most important industrial center and a popular tourist destination, Quang Ninh has maintained an average economic growth rate of 12% for the past 6 years. Two of its four ports can accommodate 15-tonnage ships and have a throughput of 10 million tons. Quang Ninh is rich in land, forest, marine and mineral resources. Its leading industries include coal mining, machinery,  construction materials, marine product processing, logistics, tourism and the transit trade. Its coal reserves are the most abundant in Vietnam, with an annual output of 18 million tons and exports of 6-7 million tons. Hainan imports about 400,000 tons of quality coal from Quang Ninh each year. The province is also a production base for timber, with an annual output of 5 million m3. Its agricultural products include cinnamon, aniseed and pseudo-ginseng. Moreover, its aquatic cultivation accounts for one quarter of the national total.

As an internationally renowned holiday resort, Halong Bay has already been listed by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It receives about 2.5 million visitors each year, most of whom are from other countries.
