Arad County

 

Situated on the border with Hungary, Arad County covers an area of 7,650 square kilometers, including 352,000 hectares of arable land, and has a population of about 500,000, with 236,000 of them being employed. Among the workforce, there are 76,000 industrial workers. Arad consists of 8 cities, 67 towns and 273 villages. Arad City, the capital city of Arad, has a population of about 20,000.

Agriculture in Arad is in a leading position nationwide and its major products include grain, vegetables, fruits and meat. The industrial sector features manufacturing, textiles, timber processing, leather processing and clothing, with output accounting for 3-5% of the total industrial output of the country.

Arad enjoys convenient transportation, thanks to its national-level highways (with a total length of 392 km), county-level highways (with a total length of 1,695 km), streets (with a total length of 3,356 km) and railways (with a total length of 485 km, including 144 km of electrified railway). Public utilities are well developed, including 560 km of water pipelines, 310 km of sewage pipelines and 130 km of gas pipelines. In addition, there are 10 hospitals and 134 health rehabilitation centers in the county.

Arad pays much attention to education. Among the 626 educational institutions, there are 2 universities, 359 primary and secondary schools and 265 kindergartens.

Moreover, there are 4 performing arts groups, 7 museums and 455 libraries in Arad.
