East New Britain Province
East New Britain is a province of Papua New Guinea, on the eastern part of the island of New Britain. As the largest of PNG's islands, the hilly Island is a long strip stretching over 600 kilometers, with numerous valleys and lush rainforests. It covers an area of 15,816 square kilometers and has a population of about 220,000.
East New Britain is dotted with active volcanoes. For this reason, a monitoring station has been set up to closely monitor volcanic activity.
Rabaul, the capital of the province, is situated at the foot of a volcanic mountain and embraced by the Port of Simpson. With a well-developed transport system and a picturesque view, Rabaul is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities of PNG. As with many other cities in PNG, Rabaul was a battlefield during the Second World War. Under the hills around Rabaul is a labyrinth of tunnels and caverns dug by Japanese army. These tunnels and caverns exist all over the Gazelle Peninsula and have a total length of more than 600 kilometers.
An excellent holiday and sightseeing resort, Rabaul offers a wide range of choices for tourists, including scuba diving to see the coral reefs, sunbathing on the beach or an expedition to the volcanoes or tropical rainforests. The weekend fair at Rabaul is another attraction, where a great variety of fruits, vegetables, shell ornaments and unique local wicker baskets and bamboo combs are available.
