Hainan registered a 13.4-percent rise in inbound and outbound passengers during this year's National Day holiday, according to official statistics.

This surge led to a peak in traffic at Hainan's three major airports. According to the Haikou General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection, from Oct 1 to Oct 7, Hainan handled 409 inbound and outbound flights and ships, along with 54,000 passenger trips, up 12.1 percent and 13.4 percent respectively compared with the same period last year.

During the seven-day holiday, Haikou Meilan International Airport recorded 30,000 passenger trips for entry and exit, a 3.4-percent rise from the previous year. Meanwhile, Sanya Phoenix International Airport saw 22,000 passenger trips, a notable increase of 28.7 percent.

The main countries of origin for incoming travelers included Russia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Belarus. For Chinese citizens, popular outbound destinations were Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia, and China's Hong Kong.

The increase in cross-border traffic has also fueled a boom in duty-free shopping on the island. According to statistics from Haikou Customs released on Oct 8, offshore duty-free sales reached 855 million yuan ($127.7 million) during this year's National Day holiday. This included 123,000 shopping trips and 696,800 purchased items.

To manage the holiday travel rush, the exit and entry frontier inspection authorities at Haikou Meilan International Airport, Sanya Phoenix International Airport and Qionghai Boao International Airport made preparations for peak travel times in advance. They monitored passenger flow changes in real time, efficiently allocated staff members, optimized duty schedules, fully opened verification lanes, added on-site signage and implemented traveler-friendly measures to ensure smooth and efficient customs clearance for both Chinese citizens and foreign visitors.
