To support international sister provinces in combating the COVID-19 epidemic, on March 18, Hainan organized the donation of 200,000 medical masks to Hyogo Prefecture of Japan and Jeju Province of the Republic of Korea, each with 100,000 masks, which are expected to arrive within 5 to 7 working days.

"A friend in need is a friend indeed. The governments of Japan and South Korea have shown us great trust, help and support during our fight against the epidemic," said an official from the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province, emphasizing that as the two countries are working hard to prevent and control the epidemic at present, Hainan will do its best to offer support and provide medical supplies that are in urgent need.

In early February while Hainan's anti-epidemic work was at a critical stage, both Hyogo and Jeju sent condolences and concern by writing letters or making videos, and donated 108,000 disposable masks and 25,000 N95 masks respectively. The central government of South Korea also donated over 56 million won (approximately RMB 320,000 yuan) worth of medical supplies including latex gloves and disinfectant.

Hainan became a sister province with Hyogo in 1990 and Jeju in 1995, and has since maintained close exchanges and cooperation with both.
